The Lubbock Area Affiliate is dedicated to educating young men and women about breast health. In 2008, the Lubbock Area Affiliate began its high school breast health initiative, educating students about breast health and the importance of early detection. Local medical experts demonstrate how to properly perform a breast self-exam and students are encouraged to become proactive about their health.

The Lubbock Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure holds “Pink Sunday,” a grassroots effort with local churches to educate the members of their respective congregations on breast health and breast cancer. This effort was launched to help address the high breast cancer mortality rate among women in the 16-counties of the South Plains. The Lubbock Area Affiliate holds Pink Sunday’s throughout the year in churches in the Affiliate’s 16-county service area: Bailey, Cochran, Cottle, Crosby, Dickens, Floyd, Garza, Hale, Hockley, Kent, Lamb, Lubbock, Lynn, Motley, Terry and Yoakum counties. The mission of Pink Sunday is to spread the life-saving message of early detection.
The Lubbock Area Affiliate provides breast health information packets to each participating church. Each individual church is responsible for coordinating the event at their Sunday service. Churches participate by:

Hats off to Breast Health is a fun and interactive presentation for the general public. It is designed to expose some common myths and misconceptions about breast cancer. The Lubbock Area Affiliate has used this creative program as part of their speakers’ bureau, survivor brunch and other outreach activities. The presentation is about 30 minutes in length.
Hats Off to Breast Health is based on the fact that every day, women wear different “hats” — mother, wife or partner, daughter, employee, student, volunteer, friend, homemaker, grandmother — and most of the time more than one. This presentation discusses how some “hats” women wear (i.e., myths they believe) that may affect their chances of surviving breast cancer.
Each lady has a unique, creatively decorated hat along with a different role to act out during the presentation. Each part personifies a common breast cancer myth or barrier to good breast health practices. Some of these barriers include fear or a fatalistic attitude, underestimating risk, no physician referral, fear of mammography, no time or money, and a lack of confidence for breast self-exams. During the presentation, the speaker asks each character to read her beliefs aloud to the audience. Then, the speaker addresses each woman’s fears or concerns. For example:
Hesitant Hannah — “My doctor knows what I need, and she has NEVER said anything to me about doing breast self-exams or getting a mammogram. I would never question my health care provider. I always do what my doctor tells me to do. If she thought I should be doing BSE, she would have said something.”
