2012-2013 Community Based Grant Recipients

American Cancer Society - $13,110

Lubbock Area Breast Prostheses and Lymphedema Support

The American Cancer Society’s Lubbock Area Breast Prostheses and Lymphedema Support program provides women of the South Plains support and financial assistance to alleviate the cost of breast prostheses, wigs, and lymphedema support garments.

Covenant Health System - $44,907.00

Mobile Mammography

Covenant Health System’s Mobile Mammography program provides screening mammography to women in rural and underserved communities. Covenant Health System’s Mobile Mammography takes a comprehensive approach to care by providing one-on-one education for patients about how to detect a lump or abnormality in their breast, mammography screening for early detection and diagnostic follow-up care. This program also allows for screening and diagnostic services through Arrington Comprehensive Breast Center.

Joe Arrington Cancer Center - $19,918.00

Chorus of Angels

The Chorus of Angels financial assistance program is designed to alleviate expenses that create barriers to essential treatment for financially vulnerable breast cancer patients of the Joe Arrington Cancer Center. Patients often discover that along with the high cost of treatment, they have many out-of-pocket expenses that could prevent them from completing treatment. Expenses for basic needs such as transportation and lodging are almost never covered by insurance and Chorus of Angels can help alleviate many of these out-of-pocket expenses.

Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health, TTUHSC- $10,000.00

Breast Cancer Treatment Down Payment Fund

This program will provide down payment assistance to women who are uninsured or underinsured to ensure women have timely access to treatment that is not otherwise covered by funds.

The YWCA of Lubbock - $129,205.00

Breast and Cervical Health Initiative

The YWCA of Lubbock’s Breast and Cervical Health Initiative is devoted to educating women about breast cancer and the importance of early detection through breast self awareness, clinical breast exams and screening mammography. In addition, the program offers free breast health and breast cancer education, screening and diagnostic services to medically underserved women in the Lubbock Area Affiliate’s 16 county service area.

UMC Foundation & Southwest Cancer Treatment & Research Center - $35,806.00

Breast Cancer Prevention, Diagnosis & Treatment

University Medical Center and the Southwest Cancer Treatment & Research Center provide comprehensive breast health services including prevention, diagnosis and treatment for the communities of West Texas. The Breast Cancer Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment program will promote breast cancer prevention through targeted education, screening mammography, diagnostic services, and treatment options for women who do not have adequate healthcare coverage. Additionally, this program will help screen women for lymphedema and will offer genetic testing screenings.

Mission and Research History

In our 17 year history, the Lubbock Area Affiliate has granted more than $2.3 million dollars back to its local 16 county service area.
