These projects have been selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving uninsured or underinsured women in our service area. Please note that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is not a direct service provider.

2011-2012 Community Based Grant Recipients

American Cancer Society - $13,110

Reach to Recovery

The American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery program provides vital education and support to many breast cancer survivors by women who are themselves breast cancer survivors. One of the most critical services provided by Reach to Recovery volunteers is education to women undergoing breast cancer treatment and providing newly diagnosed patients with post-surgical accessories related to breast surgery and/or lymphedema.

Covenant Health System - $6,623

Breast Cancer Survivorship

Arrington Comprehensive Breast Center will provide a breast cancer survivorship program to women across the South Plains and will target women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and their caregivers. The program will offer support through diagnosis, treatment, grief and survivorship. Additionally, this program will seek to bring survivors closer with other survivors.

Covenant Health System - $75,810.30

Mobile Mammography

Covenant Health System’s Mobile Mammography program provides screening mammography to women in rural and underserved communities. Covenant Health System’s Mobile Mammography takes a comprehensive approach to care by providing one-on-one education for patients about how to detect a lump or abnormality in their breast, mammography screening for early detection and diagnostic follow-up care. This program also allows for screening and diagnostic services through Arrington Comprehensive Breast Center.

Joe Arrington Cancer Center - $28,700

Chorus of Angels

The Chorus of Angels financial assistance program is designed to alleviate expenses that create barriers to essential treatment for financially vulnerable breast cancer patients of the Joe Arrington Cancer Center. Patients often discover that along with the high cost of treatment, they have many out-of-pocket expenses that could prevent them from completing treatment. Expenses for basic needs such as transportation and lodging are almost never covered by insurance and Chorus of Angels can help alleviate many of these out-of-pocket expenses.

Texas AgriLife Extension Services - $7,826.56

Friend to Friend

Texas AgriLife Extension Service’s Friend to Friend program will work to educate rural women within the Lubbock Area Affiliate’s service area about breast health and preventative breast cancer screenings. The Friend to Friend program will target women in seven of the Affiliate’s 16 counties. Additionally, the program will offer a presentation by a healthcare professional, a small group discussion led by a trained volunteers and other breast health activities. Texas AgriLife Extension Service will work with screening facilities to schedule women for mammograms at or shortly after the education event.

The YWCA of Lubbock - $107,818

Breast and Cervical Health Initiative

The YWCA of Lubbock’s Breast and Cervical Health Initiative is devoted to educating women about breast cancer and the importance of early detection through breast self awareness, clinical breast exams and screening mammography. In addition, the program offers free breast health and breast cancer education, screening and diagnostic services to medically underserved women in the Lubbock Area Affiliate’s 16 county service area.

UMC Foundation & Southwest Cancer Treatment & Research Center - $70,268

Breast Cancer Prevention, Diagnosis & Treatment

University Medical Center and the Southwest Cancer Treatment & Research Center provide comprehensive breast health services including prevention, diagnosis and treatment for the communities of West Texas. The Breast Cancer Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment program will promote breast cancer prevention through targeted education, screening mammography, diagnostic services, and treatment options for women who do not have adequate healthcare coverage. Additionally, this program will help screen women for lymphedema and will offer genetic testing screenings.

UMC Foundation & Southwest Cancer Treatment & Research Center - $8,386

Celebrate Today

The Celebrate Today program will provide supplies, assistance and specialized services to breast cancer patients in the Lubbock Area Affiliate’s service area. Supplies will include lymphedema sleeves, lymphedema compression garments, wigs, transportation and housing assistance to those with financial barriers.

Mission and Research History

In our 16 year history, the Lubbock Area Affiliate has granted more than $2.3 million dollars back to its local 16 county service area.
