Are you a breast cancer survivor? Were you just recently diagnosed with breast cancer? Did you have a reoccurrence with breast cancer? Do you know someone diagnosed with breast cancer? Or, were you diagnosed with breast cancer years ago and just want to learn more about survivor activities in your area?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then this is the resource for you! The Lubbock Area Affiliate works year-round to develop programs and activities for survivors to meet new survivors and to give back to the men and women in our community.
There are many ways survivors can get involved and give back in our community, including:
Survivor’s Circle: The Survivor’s Circle is devoted to raising funds dedicated to helping women and men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. When the Lubbock Area Affiliate is notified that a new patient has been diagnosed with breast cancer, a bag containing valuable resources is delivered to the new survivor by a trained survivor volunteer. To learn more about the Survivor’s Circle or the survivor bags, please click on the Survivor’s Circle link to the right.
Beauty Brunch: The Lubbock Area Affiliate hosts a Survivor Beauty Brunch twice a year. The Beauty Brunch is a venue for new survivors (patients diagnosed within the last 12 months) to come together and meet new survivors and learn about all of the available resources in our community. Resources include: lymphedema specialists, wig salons, support groups and so much more. In addition, survivors get to hear stories from survivors who have also been diagnosed with breast cancer. To learn more about the Beauty Brunch, please contact Clarissa Sanchez at Clarissa@komenlubbock.org or 806-698-1900.
Speaker’s Bureau: Are you a survivor eager to share your story and the importance of early detection? Then this is the group for you! The Lubbock Area Affiliate Speaker’s Bureau is a group of trained volunteers who speak on behalf of the Lubbock Area Affiliate. They speak at their convenience and get to share their journey while helping spread the message of early detection. To learn more about the Speaker’s Bureau please visit the “Get Involved” tab for Speaker’s Bureau information.
If you would like to sign up for the next Speaker’s Bureau training, please Clarissa Sanchez at Clarissa@komenlubbock.org or 806-698-1900.
Volunteer: Volunteering for the Lubbock Area Affiliate can be a great way to give back and meet new survivors. The Lubbock Area Affiliate has volunteer opportunities available for people who want to give a few hours a month to weekly committee work. To learn more about volunteering with the Lubbock Area Affiliate, please go to “Get Involved.”
Survivor Spotlights: The Lubbock Area Affiliate Survivor Spotlights are part of the annual “We Think Pink in Lubbock” campaign presented by the Lubbock Area Affiliate and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal each October. It is a time to celebrate the many breast cancer survivors in our area and to share in their journey through their stories of triumph against this disease. For women diagnosed with breast cancer, it provides hope that they too will fight this disease and win. Breast cancer survivors are very special people who possess the ruthless determination to live, regardless of the odds that may be stacked against them. At Komen, we often refer to survivors as warriors in pink, and that is exactly what they are. They are men and women with a willingness to fight a battle no one should have to face. These warriors embrace the battle along with their armies of support, and many times come out on top. To read local survivor’s stories, please click on the “Survivor Spotlights” tab.
Survivor Brunch: The Think Pink Survivor brunch is held annually for survivors and their families. This year the survivor brunch will be held on Sunday, September 9th, 2012. Please check back with us in August for details.
Survivors at the Race: What would the Race be without our survivors? The Komen Lubbock Area Race for the Cure® is so much more than a fundraiser. Each year, almost 400 women and men across the South Plains celebrate another year of survivorship. The highlight of Race Day is the survivor procession kicking off the opening ceremonies.
Survivor Breakfast & Think Pink Café: Breast cancer survivors are greeted with food, special shirts and hats, and hundreds of open arms at the Survivor Breakfast and Think Pink Café. Join us Race morning to celebrate this wonderful event with other local survivors.
Survivor Recognition: Honor a special survivor in your life by purchasing a survivor to be near the finish line. Survivors may take their signs with them following the Race. The posters are large enough to accommodate personal messages and tributes. To order your sign, check survivor recognition sign on your registration form or email race@komenlubbock.org. Signs are $100 each.
